Examples.
 
1. わたし は 日曜日 (にちようび) に 漫画 (まんが) や 雑誌 (ざっし) を 読 (よ) みます。
I read comics and magazines on Sundays.
2. パン や 卵 (たまご) など を 食 (た) べます。
I eat bread, egg, and so on.
3. わたし の 部屋 (へや) に 机 (つくえ) や ベッド や テレビ など が あります。
In my room I have things like a desk, a bed and a TV.
4. デパート や スーパー で 買 (か) い 物 (もの) を します。
I shop at department stores and supermarkets.
5. 郵便局 (ゆうびんきょく) の 前 (まえ) や 駅 (えき) の そば に ポスト が あります。
There are postboxes in front of post offices or near stations.

Grammar Discussion.
 
A. This sentence pattern can connect several nouns together. (Examples 1,2,3,4,5)
B. 「や」is used for showing a number of relevant items as examples, and implies that other relevant items exist. (Examples 1,2,3,4,5)
C. The nouns joined by 「や」 can be used as a single noun in the sentence. (Examples 1,2,3,4,5)
D. This sentence pattern can be used in the form 「 N1 や N2 など 」. (Examples 2,3)

         N: a person or people with whom one does action V

Examples.
 
1. わたし は 田中 (たなか) さん と デパート へ 行 (い)きました。
I went to a department store with Tanaka-san.
2. 夏休 (なつやす) み に 家族 (かぞく) と 旅行 (りょこう) を しました。
I took a trip with my family during the summer holiday.
3. 先週 (せんしゅう)、佐藤 (さとう) さん と いっしょ に 映画 (えいが) を 見 (み) ました。
I watched a movie with Sato-san last week.
4. 電話 (でんわ) で 友 (とも)だち と 話 (はな)しました。
I talked with a friend of mine over the phone.
5a. だれ と テニス を しましたか。
With whom did you play tennis?

5b. 田中 (たなか) さん と しました。
I played with Tanaka-san.

Grammar Discussion.
 
A. 「と」 indicates that N is the partner in doing something. (Examples 1,2,3,4,5)
B. When asking who the partner is, 「だれと」 is used. (Example 5)

         N: purpose of movement
         V1: an action which serves as the purpose of movement Vます

Examples.
 
1. あした 父 (ちち) は デパート へ 買物 (かいもの) に 行 (い)きます。
My father will go shopping at a department store tomorrow.
2. 田中 (たなか) さん は わたし の 国 (くに) へ 勉強 (べんきょう) に 来 (き) ました。
Tanaka-san came to study in my country.
3. 来週 (らいしゅう)、バスケットボール の 試合 (しあい) を 見 (み) に 行 (い) きます。
I'm going to see a basketball game next week.
4. うち へ 忘物 (わすれもの) を 取 (と) り に 帰 (かえ) ります。
I'll go home to get something that I left behind.
5a. どこ へ 行 (い) きますか。
Where are you going?

5a. 公園 (こうえん) へ 行 (い) きます。
I'm going to the park.

5a. 何 (なに) を し に 行 (い) きますか。
What are you going there for?

5a. バスケットボール を し に 行 (い)きます。
To play basketball.

Grammar Discussion.
 
A. V1 can be made by taking out 「ます」 from 「Vます」 as in 「い行きます→い行き」.
B. 「に」 indicates that N and V1 are movements with purposes. (Examples 1,2,3,4,5)
C. If N or the place where the action indicated by V1 is taken, i.e. the destination of movement is expressed, the particle 「へ」 is used.
D. Asking what one's purpose can be expressed with 「なに何をしにVますか」. (Example 5)
